Dazzled by the re-painted lines (thank you Merchants) glistening in the late September sun, the 1s were all present on time and remarkably sober ready to take on Somerset Gryphons in the first match of their 2017/18 league campaign! Gryphons were a much changed side from last season and seem to have spent the summer break drinking from the Fountain of Youth… unlike the 1s who’ve mostly been drinking cider. However, it turns out young legs aren’t quite a match for age and experience. Sam started her defence of the Top Scorer title in fine fashion with a hat-trick, but the Gryphons keeper kept Kelly only 2 goals behind with a mis-timed clearance- you know it’s not a contender for ‘Goal of the Month’ when the goalie audibly sighs at you. Gryphons weren’t without chances, and there were a couple of squeaky-bum moments at the other end, but our defence held it together to keep Brunel 1’s only clean sheet of the weekend. Great job, ladies.
Mentioned in Player-of-the-Match despatches were Ally Blaa (seen to out-run a child several times- all the yoga’s paying off) and Aimz (interesting choice of leggings in 20C sun, but clinical in the tackle, run and pass), with Doble clinching the title (nearly on the scoresheet, and her inner chimp put in a composed performance throughout – nice work).
Other highlights – Bolti‘s strop after being beaten by a child half her size. Quiche Lorraine was either the most or least popular of the many quiche options available at teas. All were cast into the shadow by the revelation that is Lasagne in a Loaf. #breadmeatcheesepastadelicious #carbs #allabouttheteas
